Want to make a busy background fall away and become less distracting? Set your camera to “Av” mode and select a wide aperture number, i.e. 4, 2.8, or 2 (smaller number = wider aperture.) Your camera will select the appropriate shutter speed accordingly. Focus correctly on your subject and your subject should be sharp while your background becomes blurry. The wider your aperture the more your background will fall out of focus. The technical term for this is called “shallow depth of field.”
