Senior Portraits. They mark a very special time in life: so exciting and promising for the young adult who looks ahead into all the possibilities of what the future may hold; and so bittersweet and slightly overwhelming for the parents anticipating the moment they have to say goodbye. It’s a remarkable time of transition for a family to go through.
This is exactly the cross roads my family is beginning to embrace. My daughter is a member of the Class of 2015. She is coming into the summer before her senior year. And the transition has already begun.
I recently received an email with an appointment date and time for my daughters Senior Portraits for the yearbook. Shockingly the appointment is only a few weeks away. In South Carolina, public schools contract with a studio for the yearbook photos. So we will be forced to go at our allotted appointment time for the very predictable portrait with the black fabric draped around the shoulders. You can imagine how thrilled I’ll be. NOT!
I do understand that it is a rites of passage, and I also fully know there is a place and time for school portraits! I’ve collected them every year since she was in preschool. But I’m dreading the up-sell (although it will be fun to witness). And I’m dreading another year of seeing the mediocre pictures (at best) from those that buy into the bigger package. Everyone kid is run through the same 3-5 generic back drops and posed in the same ways, and then the studio will remove ALL of their pores when they over smooth the skin and charge them for a disk of 100 pictures they don’t really like.
I know, I’m probably ranting! But it’s because I believe that photography is an art. And I believe there is such a missed opportunity here for the senior and their family! These kids are so special. They are so talented and amazing and interesting. These kids are FANTASTIC! I want so much for their senior portraits to be FANTASTIC too! I want the photographs they have to be a true reflection of who they are at this point in their life.
Every year disappointed parents call me and schedule a session for their child because they want something special. And they’re not happy with the results from the contracted studio. And I have the pleasure of creating a custom session that really focuses on their child and their own unique talents. We always have a GREAT time! And I always recommend we do a few family shots too, because the family dynamic will soon be forever changed.
This will be an interesting process to go through, sitting on the other side of the photography experience. I’ll keep you up to date on my findings. Although I already know how this will play out… I’ll be shooting my daughters senior portraits. All except the one with the black draped fabric that appears in the yearbook.
